tabriz-rug-beige-blue-green-10x13ft
Vintage Tabriz Rug — Soft Sand & Seafoam Afshan | 9'8" × 12'10"

Tabriz rugs are Persian rugs woven in the city of Tabriz, one of Iran’s most important centres of carpet weaving, renowned for the extraordinary variety of its rugs. The World Crafts Council has designated Tabriz a World Craft City for Carpet Weaving.

Tabriz has long been a centre of carpet weaving, producing rugs in a wide range of sizes, knot counts and colours, a tradition that continues today.

Tabriz rugs of medium fineness, made primarily for the domestic market, were generally woven at knot counts of 25 to 35 raj.

This rug belongs to that group and was washed to give it a vintage, aged appearance for the export market.

This washing treatment was developed by Oriental Carpet Manufacturers (O.C.M.) in the late Qajar period, as the vivid, strong colours of rugs from Tabriz and some other weaving regions of Iran did not appeal to Western consumers.

The rug has an afshan design, with motifs spread across the field in a one-directional composition based on a lengthwise half-repeat. There are no corner spandrels or central medallion; the design is composed of islimi arabesque scrolls, Shah Abbasi palmettes and khatai floral tendrils.

This style has long been particularly admired by lovers of Persian rugs in Western countries, especially the United States, for the harmonious continuity of its design across the entire rug.

Tabriz rugs of this type typically use twelve colours: two principal colours for the field and border, and ten secondary colours, known as khordeh-rang, or accent colours, that embellish the remaining elements of the design.

The antique-washing treatment softens all the colours evenly, reducing their intensity to the most muted tones possible. This gives the rug a distinctive, unified palette that is easy to coordinate with the surrounding décor.

This rug was woven approximately 50 years ago.

Origin: Tabriz, Persia

Material: Hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation

Dimensions: 9' 8" x 12' 10" (approximately 295 x 391 cm)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0631/1460/8857/files/vintage-tabriz-rug-soft-sand-seafoam-afshan-98-1210-2421035.jpg?v=1790130976
