The field is a deep red, with a dark star-shaped medallion right in the centre. Above and below it sit two vase-like forms with curling white hooks, almost like ram’s horns, sprouting branches in every colour: turquoise, yellow, green, pink. The four corners are cut into dark navy steps, and each one holds a little flowering branch with bright red blossoms. Then dozens of tiny flowers are scattered across the red like confetti.

Hamadan rugs come from hundreds of villages around the city, and each village has its own habits. This one has the bold, angular drawing you often see in that village weaving: shapes built from steps and straight lines rather than smooth curves. It’s hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, and if you flip it over you can see each knot clearly on the back. That’s one of the nice ways to tell a handmade rug from a machine-made one.

There’s also something special if you look closely: a small inscription in Persian script is woven into the lower part of the field, most likely a name or a signature. Little details like that are what make a village rug feel personal.

The pile is still full and soft, and the size works really well in a bedroom, an entry or a smaller living room. It’s warm and colourful, and it has real character without feeling busy.

Age: Circa 1990s

Origin: Hamadan, Persia

Material: Hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation

Dimensions: 4' 10" x 9' 8" (approximately 147 x 295 cm)
