A pointed arch can make a rug feel like a doorway. In a Safavid niche rug held at Topkapı Palace, that doorway is also a page of writing: the first border opens with Solomon's name, several Qur'anic passages travel around the composition, and flowers, cypress-like forms and a suspended vessel rise inside the arch.
The University of Tehran study illustrates the Topkapı rug itself. The open-access Safavid carpet below belongs to the same broad niche-rug tradition but is a different object. It lets us see how inscriptions, an arched field and dense ornament can share one woven surface. Its text and motifs should not be used to identify details of the Topkapı rug.
The Topkapı rug measures about 170 by 116 centimetres. Its date and place of weaving remain debated in the scholarship discussed by the study, with proposals ranging from the sixteenth century to the early seventeenth century and from northwest Iran to Kashan. A compelling interpretation does not settle that attribution.
A rug built from two languages
The composition works through words and images at the same time. In the upper border, a passage from Qur'an 27:30 begins, “It is from Solomon, and it is in the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.” It is followed by verses from Qur'an 6:83-84, which name Abraham's line and include David among the prophets. Other borders carry passages associated with Jonah's prayer, reliance on God, the Throne Verse, the Light Verse and the discipline of prayer, alongside divine names and the phrase Allahu Akbar kabira.
The sequence establishes a route through the Topkapı rug. The eye moves from the written borders toward the arch, while the central forms pull it upward. Words give the field one order; colour and ornament give it another.
What does Solomon's name do at the threshold?
Solomon is remembered in Islamic and Persian storytelling as a prophet with wisdom, command over unseen beings and authority over a kingdom. Later histories and qisas al-anbiya traditions expand the image of his throne or flying carpet. The Qur'an speaks of the wind being subjected to him, but does not describe a carpet in that passage.
The rug gathers several strands of memory around a name. Solomon can appear here as prophet, king, judge and guide. Such a figure offered Safavid artists a way to bring spiritual authority and kingship into the same visual world.
Look closely at the red threshold
On the Topkapı rug, the first border is red. The study connects that colour with wisdom and spiritual knowledge in the Persian philosophical and mystical traditions it surveys. Colour alone cannot prove an intention, but it helps the threshold feel distinct from the pale inscription panels and the denser interior.
Inside the Topkapı rug, the drawing becomes more crowded. Khata'i and islimi stems curl around an eight-petalled flower. Cypress-like forms rise beside it. A vase or lamp hangs on the central axis, while the arch gathers the movement toward a point above.
The niche has many other woven forms. These related designs do not give the Topkapı rug a fixed meaning, but they help place its unusually dense writing in context.
Lotus, cypress and the Light Verse
The paper reads the flower and the flanking forms through a chain of related images. It connects the eight-petalled Shah Abbasi flower with older lotus imagery, and it notices the cypress-like leaves where a viewer might expect the olive tree or another sacred tree. In the study's interpretation, the forms can hold Iranian and Islamic associations at once.
The Light Verse gives that reading its strongest focus. The verse speaks of a niche, a lamp and a blessed tree. On the Topkapı rug, a vessel beneath the arch and the upward movement of floral forms may echo that vocabulary. This is an interpretation of one composition, not proof that every Safavid weaver intended a direct illustration of the verse.
Why Safavid kingship enters the picture
Safavid rule brought Sufi origins, Shi'i belief and monarchy into a single political world. The study places the rug within that setting and asks what kind of ruler its Solomon might represent. A king who is also a prophet and a possessor of wisdom offers a compact image of authority that is both worldly and sacred.
Illustrated manuscripts make the comparison more tangible. The image below, painted in 1539, shows Solomon enthroned among people, birds and beasts. It was made decades before the reign of Shah Abbas I and is not a design source established for this rug. It does show that Safavid viewers could encounter Solomon as a ruler in another art form.
Read this way, the rug's royal dimension does not cancel its devotional one. The same composition can imagine prayer as movement toward light, while also presenting a ruler as wise, legitimate and capable of guiding an ordered world. The paper's conclusion is best understood as a historical possibility, not as a universal key for every niche rug.
One composition, several meanings
Its border order, readable wording, central axis and arrangement of colour are physical features we can describe. Whether their combination suggests spiritual ascent, royal authority or both belongs to interpretation. The distinction leaves the rug room to be a beautiful object as well as an unusually rich historical text. An arch alone cannot prove how it was used, and the inscriptions deserve more than a decorative label.
