Tabriz Mihrab Rugs: Arches, Lamps and Woven Architecture

Tabriz Mihrab Rugs: Arches, Lamps and Woven Architecture - Rug the Rock

A small pale lamp hangs in an almost empty red field. Two slender columns rise beside it, and a pointed arch closes the space above. The design has very few parts, yet it makes a flat carpet feel like the entrance to another place.

That economy is one of the surprises of Tabriz mihrab rugs. Tabriz is often associated with elaborate floral drawing, but its niche designs can be remarkably spare. Others bring the lamp, columns, flowers and inscriptions together in a much denser composition. Comparing them reveals how much a weaver can change while retaining the same architectural idea.

The five Tabriz rugs illustrated here belong to the Iranian Carpet Museum. Together they show the variety within this design family, rather than representing every kind of Persian prayer rug.

Architecture drawn in colour

Mihrab is the architectural niche that indicates the direction of prayer in a mosque. In Persian rug terminology, mihrabi describes a composition organized around a related niche or arch. “Prayer rug” is the familiar English term, although it can suggest a documented use that the design alone does not establish.

On a carpet, that architectural space becomes a relationship between coloured areas. The niche is the main field. The upper corner areas outside the arch, called spandrels, may carry a different colour or denser ornament. Borders surround both. Even without realistic perspective, those divisions make the design feel spatial.

How much can an open red field do?

Two Tabriz mihrab rugs with pointed arches, paired columns and small hanging lamps in open red fields
Two pointed niches leave the centre largely open. The columns and suspended lamps give that open colour a clear structure.

In the first pair, the red niche occupies much of the rug without being filled by a repeating pattern. A pale lamp hangs from its apex, while narrow columns mark its sides. The surrounding borders carry most of the smaller ornament.

The open field is doing active visual work. It separates the lamp from the border, makes its suspended position unmistakable and gives the columns room to stand apart. If the same space were filled with flowers, those small architectural details would be less prominent.

The two rugs also show how colour changes the effect of a closely related layout. One sets its red niche within a warm, pale surround; the other has a cooler surrounding field in the published photograph. Their structure is similar, but the contrast around the arch is different. These are comparisons between source reproductions, not measurements of the original dyes.

The arch changes the whole composition

A scalloped outline gives this niche a different character. Dense blue spandrels frame the small lamp above the quieter red field.

Here the straight ascent of the earlier pointed arches gives way to an indented, curving outline. The blue spandrels are packed with pale floral ornament. Below them, the red field remains relatively quiet.

The contrast makes the top of the niche particularly important. Your eye moves between the floral corners, the curve of the arch and the hanging lamp. The pale columns continue down its sides, while a row of small repeated forms closes the lower edge. The architecture is suggested through these boundaries rather than through a realistic drawing of a building.

Symmetry matters, but so does the distribution of detail. A quiet centre can hold its own against a richly patterned border when their proportions and colours work together.

Why does a lamp hang inside the rug?

The hanging motif is called a qandil, a lamp. Its thin suspension line makes it different from a flower growing on a stem, even when its body is embellished with plant-like forms.

The lamp can evoke both mosque architecture and the religious symbolism of light, including the niche and lamp in the Qur’anic Light Verse. This devotional reading is a possibility, not proof that every weaver or owner attached an identical meaning to the motif.

The motif also has a clear compositional role. Suspended on the central axis, it draws attention to a particular point within the niche. The pair of columns provides balance around it. Architecture and ornament do not have to be separate layers: the lamp helps organize the picture while carrying the possibility of a devotional association.

When the lamp and vase share the field

The lamp is larger and more elaborate here. A flowering vase below it creates a second focus on the same central axis.

This example keeps the red niche but changes the density of its interior. A conspicuous lamp occupies the upper centre. Below it, a vase and spreading floral forms fill the lower part of the field. The two elements draw the eye along the same vertical line.

It is a useful reminder that names such as lamp, vase and columned mihrab describe features that can coexist. They need not be mutually exclusive boxes. A single rug can combine all three without losing the clarity of its arch.

Trees can organize the niche in a related but distinct way. Our article on tree motifs in Persian prayer rugs explores that branch of the family. Here, the important relationship is between the suspended object above and the flowering vessel below.

Inscriptions can change the story

Inscription panels and paired animals make this a more complex composition than the open-field examples. The niche alone does not explain its purpose.

The final example is especially important because it complicates the label “prayer rug.” Its field contains writing and animal imagery as well as the niche composition. Its inscriptions have been read as praise of Mozaffar al-Din Shah, suggesting a connection with royal imagery and decorative display.

That courtly reading shows why an architectural outline cannot settle an object’s function by itself. A mihrab-shaped design can participate in a commemorative programme as well as evoke a devotional setting.

Across these examples, the niche remains recognizable while the experience changes: open colour and a small lamp, a scalloped arch, a larger floral composition, then a field complicated by words and animals. The interest lies in those differences, not in assigning one fixed meaning to the entire group.

For the wider weaving tradition, see our guide to Tabriz rugs. The Tabriz Rugs collection offers a broader view of the region's designs; the historical museum examples illustrated above are not store inventory.
