Vintage Boteh Mir Rug | 3' 5" × 4' 11"

This semi-antique rug from regions near Arak city is built around the quiet persistence of a small motif. Tiny boteh (paisley) repeats across the red field until they create an almost textile-like texture. From across a room you see a warm, closely patterned surface; nearby, the individual shapes become the attraction.
The light corners and stepped outline give that dense repeat a clear shape. Their angular edges contrast with the curves of the boteh, while the layered borders introduce a larger scale of decoration. It is this relationship between a finely worked centre and a more emphatic perimeter that gives the rug its distinctive balance.
At three feet five inches by four feet eleven inches, it could bring a concentrated area of colour to a reading corner, a bedside or the space in front of a cabinet. Cream fabric would pick up its lighter details, while warm timber could sit comfortably with the red. Keeping some of the corners and border exposed would preserve the composition's pleasing outline.
Sarband lies near Arak in Iran's Markazi province, within a region whose village weaving became closely connected to the expanding carpet trade of the late nineteenth century. The pattern has a particularly relevant local association: a Persian study of boteh distinguishes the small boteh mir forms used in Saraband and Mal Mir carpets around Arak, also known as Mir or Mir Saraband. That connection between place and pattern adds another dimension to the tiny repeating paisley forms in this rug.

Care Instructions
Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.
Spills
If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.
Professional Rug Cleaning
It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option. Always choose a professional rug cleaner who specializes in cleaning fine, handwoven carpets. If you’re in the GTA, we can provide professional rug cleaning for you!
