Sarough is a town in the Sarough district of Arak County, in Iran’s Markazi Province. It lies 40 kilometres north of Arak.

The town of Sarough and the village of Jiria lie north of Arak, where both women and men are highly skilled in rug weaving. Several centuries of weaving in these two places have made the Sarough name well known among rug merchants in Europe and America.

In the past, the establishment of offices and branches by foreign companies led to designs being developed around customers’ tastes and preferences, giving rise to new types of Persian rugs. From the early years of the twentieth century, rugs now known as Ziegler or Sultanabad were produced in designs and colour combinations favoured by American buyers. Many examples are known as American Sarough rugs.

Their colours tend towards deep or muted pink. They feature all-over designs without a medallion, or with a very small floral medallion. Sarough rugs continue to be produced in this tradition today. Known for their exceptional quality and ability to withstand decades of wear, they remain bestsellers. They are tightly woven from high-quality wool using the Persian knot.

Among the characteristic features of Sarough rugs are blue weft threads, salmon or tomato reds combined with ivory and blue, and a distinctly traditional floral style.

The colours of Sarouq rugs: Many of the dyes used in Sarouq rugs come from natural materials grown by local farmers. Sarough dooghi, Moshkabad madder red and Farahan blue are among the most important colours used in rugs from Arak and Sarough. Madder red, navy blue and lac red (laki) predominate in the weavings of Sarough and the surrounding villages, with cream and green appearing less frequently. The use of plant-based dyes prepared by traditional methods is one reason for the reputation of Sarough rugs. Combinations of these colours can greatly enhance a rug’s beauty, creating captivating visual effects.

This rug is a beautiful example of a classic Sarouk, with a central medallion and corner spandrels that recall older Sarough rugs.

A distinctive feature of this rug is the use of arabesque motifs in the border, corner spandrels and central medallion, creating a particular sense of artistic harmony and rhythm. Tomato red and deep indigo blue dominate the restrained palette. As well as lending the rug a sense of warmth, this limited range of colours makes it easier to coordinate with the décor of the room in which it is placed.

Judging by its design, this rug was made approximately 50 years ago.

Care Instructions

Vacuuming

Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.

Spills

If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.

Professional Rug Cleaning

It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option.
