Understand the Bokhara Rug Label

Bokhara, also spelled Bukhara, is a familiar market label, but it does not prove that a rug was woven in the city of Bukhara. Encyclopaedia Iranica notes that Turkmen carpets have often been called Bukhara in the trade and distinguishes them from later rugs made in several countries in imitation of traditional Turkmen patterns. Repeating gul medallions can be important visual evidence, but design alone is not enough to assign a rug to a specific Turkmen group.

Compare Pattern, Structure and Attribution

Look at the complete field to compare the gul repeat, minor motifs, borders and colour balance. Then use the individual product page for the available evidence about origin, date, pile and foundation materials, knot structure, dimensions, condition and repairs. The Metropolitan Museum of Art identifies a historic Tekke main carpet through a combination of its specific gul form, construction and context. That does not make every rug sold as Bokhara a Tekke weaving.
