Karadagh, also known as Gharadagh or Gharedagh, is a region in Iran located northeast of Tabriz, near the Azerbaijan border. The village of Qarājeh (Karaja) in this region is renowned for producing high-quality handmade rugs, known as Karadagh or Karaja rugs. These rugs are made entirely of wool and feature symmetrical knots, with a distinctly Persian appearance, similar to Karabagh rugs. The region is inhabited by various Turkic tribes, including the Beghdillu, Haji-Alilu, and others, who have transitioned from nomadic pastoralism to a sedentary lifestyle, yet retain many aspects of their traditional culture. The unique blend of Persian and Caucasian influences in Karadagh rugs makes them a prized possession for rug enthusiasts.
