Mashad Rugs - Rug the Rock

This collection brings together rugs from Mashhad (often spelled Mashad) and other weaving centres of Khorasan in northeastern Iran, including Sabzevar and Kashmar. Mashhad, home to the shrine of Imam Reza, is the region's main carpet city. Its floral style is closely tied to the Shah Abbasi blossom: in a study of the shrine's own carpets, nine in ten floral sprays were filled with these palmettes.

Modern Mashhad weaving was revived by workshops such as that of the Amoghli brothers, whose designs drew on northeastern Iranian and Herat models. Large Shah Abbasi blossoms on fine stems, set on deep red or dark navy grounds, are typical of their best work, but their output ranged from very fine carpets to plainer rugs with larger motifs and lower knot counts, so the city name alone does not tell you a rug's quality. Each listing here records its own size, age and condition.
