What Makes a Rug Hand-Knotted

In a hand-knotted pile rug, yarn is tied around foundation warps, secured by wefts and cut to form the pile and design. This differs from a flatweave, where the visible surface is built mainly through interlaced or wrapped warps and wefts without an all-over knotted pile. Hand-knotted describes construction, not one country, pattern, fibre or quality grade.

Judge More Than Knot Count

Symmetrical and asymmetrical describe two common knot structures. Knot density can affect how much detail a design can carry, but a higher count does not automatically prove better materials, stronger construction, greater age or higher value. Fibre, spin, foundation, wefting, pile, finishing, drawing, condition and intended use also matter.
