A Yalameh Qashqai Rug with Ancient Symbols and Rhythmic Beauty

Yalameh rugs are a type of Persian tribal rug woven by the Yalameh tribe of the Qashqai confederacy, centred around Borujen County in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province.

This rug is a beautiful example of Yalameh weaving, featuring the Howzi design (Howz means pool or pond), one of the most well-known Yalameh patterns from the past to the present. It is woven in a Turkish-knot style, using local hand-spun wool and vegetable dyes, with an all-wool construction.

The three connected pools or medallions in the design symbolize the threefold world in ancient Turkic belief. The tree of life motifs on either side of them are a metaphor for the continuous flow of life around the axis of this threefold world.

The motifs in this rug combine angular geometric forms with more curvilinear elements. They are set against a madder-red field, with accents of mustard, gold, blue, navy, and other tones, creating a distinctive colour harmony.

The border design is formed by the repetition of an abstract dragon motif, a symbol of power and good fortune, set against a white ground. On both sides of it are narrow borders with boteh motifs. This is one of the most beautiful and long-standing border designs in Yalameh rugs. It enhances the beauty of the piece and makes the main field appear more expansive.

The formal, symbolic, and visual harmony of this rug turns it into a rhythmic and readable work of art. With a little time and attention, it draws in the eye and the mind, inviting appreciation for its depth, balance, and beauty.

Care Instructions

Vacuuming

Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.

Spills

If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.

Professional Rug Cleaning

It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option.
