- Description
- SPECS
Tabriz rugs are Persian rugs woven in the city of Tabriz, one of Iran’s most important centres of carpet weaving, renowned for the extraordinary variety of its rugs. The World Crafts Council has designated Tabriz a World Craft City for Carpet Weaving.
Tabriz has long been a centre of carpet weaving, producing rugs in a wide range of sizes, knot counts and colours, a tradition that continues today.
Tabriz rugs of medium fineness, made primarily for the domestic market, were generally woven at knot counts of 25 to 35 raj.
This rug belongs to that group and was washed to give it a vintage, aged appearance for the export market.
This washing treatment was developed by Oriental Carpet Manufacturers (O.C.M.) in the late Qajar period, as the vivid, strong colours of rugs from Tabriz and some other weaving regions of Iran did not appeal to Western consumers.
The rug has an all-over design based on a quarter-repeat layout, incorporating the leaf motifs known as barg-e chodani, or ‘cast-iron leaves’, and Shah Abbasi palmettes.
The antique-washing treatment gives these rugs a distinctive, unified palette, making them easier to coordinate with the surrounding décor.
This rug was woven approximately 50 years ago.

Care Instructions
Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.
Spills
If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.
Professional Rug Cleaning
It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option. Always choose a professional rug cleaner who specializes in cleaning fine, handwoven carpets. If you’re in the GTA, we can provide professional rug cleaning for you!
