NW Persian Meshkin Runner Rug | 4' 1" x 11' 9"

$1,680.00

Meshkin is one of Iran’s village rug-weaving regions. Because of its proximity to the Caucasus, the patterns and motifs of its rugs are generally rooted in Caucasian designs.

This Meshkin runner, however, may be considered a rare example woven with Turkmen motifs. Locally, this type of rug is sometimes called tarh-e ghalat, meaning an “unconventional design” or a design that goes against the usual local tradition. In this case, that unusual choice adds an extra layer of interest and distinction to the rug.

This runner is woven with local hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, with cotton warps and wefts. It is made with the symmetrical knot, a double-wefted structure, and a semi-depressed weave. This construction gives the rug both durability and good stability on different surfaces.

The field design of this runner is inspired by the Turkmen Göl Ayneh (Ayneh Gul) motif and is arranged in a repeating pattern. With a closer look, however, one can still see the colour harmony that belongs to the Meshkin weaving tradition. Unlike Turkmen rugs, where deep indigo-navy and strong red are usually dominant, this runner uses a black background, with madder red and off-white tones in the motifs. These colours give the rug a distinctive sense of depth while also confirming the presence of Meshkin’s own weaving tradition. In a way, the Meshkin weaver has localized the Turkmen design with personal skill, taste, and ingenuity.

The field is framed by three rows of simple borders. Through their colour harmony and avoidance of large-scale motifs, these borders are designed not to overpower the main field, allowing the viewer’s attention to remain focused on the central design of this NW Persian rug.

Please Consider

Our rugs are truly unique and crafted with care. Their vintage and handmade nature means they may have imperfections and signs of wear, which add character. Each rug is handmade, so it may not be a perfect rectangle.

We strive to capture the rugs’ true colors in daylight photography, but they might appear slightly different in low-light environments or on different screen settings.

We’re happy to provide photos taken in different lighting or answer any questions.

Care Instructions

Vacuuming

Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.

Spills

If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.

Professional Rug Cleaning

It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option. Always choose a professional rug cleaner who specializes in cleaning fine, handwoven carpets. If you’re in the GTA, we can provide professional rug cleaning for you!

Rug Pads

Using a rug pad with your vintage rug may extend its life and provide extra traction and protection for your floors. To learn more about the pros and cons of rug pads, read this article.
