Persian Kurd Saujbolagh Runner Rug | 3' 8" x 13' 5"

$3,048.00

Mahabad, historically known as Savojbolagh, is the administrative centre of Mahabad County in Persia’s West Azerbaijan Province.

The region was once an important centre of Kurdish rug weaving, although this tradition has unfortunately been largely forgotten. Savojbolagh rugs are among the most beautiful forms of Kurdish weaving and, because of the region’s distinctive geography and natural environment, have earned a special reputation among international collectors.

The area’s cold, mountainous climate produces wool with a remarkable natural lustre. When this local wool is processed by hand and traditionally dyed with regional dyes, it gives Savojbolagh rugs excellent resistance to light and wear while greatly enhancing their visual beauty.

This rug is a beautiful example of Savojbolagh weaving. Its design is an intuitive interpretation of the celebrated Mina Khani¹ pattern, brought together with local wool and regional colours. Along with its beauty and harmonious composition, the rug has a generous, high pile that gives it an exceptionally soft and inviting feel.

Madder red dominates the palette, accompanied by repeated accents of pistachio green and golden yellow that define the outlines of the motifs across the field. Together with the negative spaces in the design, these colours create an uninterrupted path of flowing beauty and a truly distinctive harmony.

Another remarkable feature is the local weaver’s creative decision to use the same ground colour in both the main border and the central field. This creates a sense of visual calm while also making the rug appear broader and more expansive.

The rug is woven in a compact lul-baft² structure with symmetrical knots and a high pile. This construction gives it the necessary body and stability to sit securely on different types of flooring, even without the use of a rug pad.

Care Instructions

Vacuuming

Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.

Spills

If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.

Professional Rug Cleaning

It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option. Always choose a professional rug cleaner who specializes in cleaning fine, handwoven carpets. If you’re in the GTA, we can provide professional rug cleaning for you!

Rug Pads

Using a rug pad with your vintage rug may extend its life and provide extra traction and protection for your floors. To learn more about the pros and cons of rug pads, read this article.

Bidjar rugs are called the “Iron rugs of Persia!” They come from the Kurdish weavers of Bijar county, and they’re famous for being unbelievably dense and durable—so much so that they barely fold, they stand upright when you lift them! The secret? The weavers use a unique technique, tightly packing the wool as they weave, creating a rug that can last centuries without losing its shape. The designs? Usually the timeless Herati pattern, a delicate arrangement of floral and fish-like leaf motifs. If you want a Persian rug that can withstand generations of footsteps and still look stunning, Bidjar is the one.
