Arshaq is a district of Meshkin Shahr County in Ardabil Province in NW Persia, bordering the Republic of Azerbaijan to the north. This region has long been one of the centres for producing various types of loom-woven textiles and handwoven rugs.
Some of Iran’s most beautifully patterned village rugs have been woven in this area, most often in runner or small rug sizes.
This rug is woven in the Khonchali design, also known as Khonchehyi, one of the most beautiful, authentic, and widely used designs in this region, as well as in many other rug-weaving areas of Iran.
Because of the long format of the rug, the medallion of the Khonchali design is repeated three times across the field. This repetition also evokes the idea of a threefold world. A three-part border surrounds the field, fully harmonious with it in both colour and pattern.
The use of local hand-spun wool, dyed in the traditional way with local dyes, has created subtle abrash and colour highlights throughout the field, medallions, and corner motifs, giving the rug a special beauty and depth.
The restrained colour palette and the use of negative space within the design give this rug a particular sense of calm, which can be considered one of its defining qualities.
One of the notable technical features of this rug is its cotton foundation combined with wool wefts. This gives the rug the necessary structure and stability while also creating a distinctive softness and suppleness.

Our rugs are truly unique and crafted with care. Their vintage and handmade nature means they may have imperfections and signs of wear, which add character. Each rug is handmade, so it may not be a perfect rectangle.
We strive to capture the rugs’ true colors in daylight photography, but they might appear slightly different in low-light environments or on different screen settings.
We’re happy to provide photos taken in different lighting or answer any questions.

Care Instructions
Vacuuming
Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.
Spills
If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.
Professional Rug Cleaning
It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option. Always choose a professional rug cleaner who specializes in cleaning fine, handwoven carpets. If you’re in the GTA, we can provide professional rug cleaning for you!
