Vintage Persian Gabbeh Rug | 3' 3" x 5' 1"

Gabbeh is a type of tribal weaving produced by the Qashqai confederacy, a nomadic population made up of Turkic, Lur, Kurdish, and Arab groups. Each of these communities developed its own traditional characteristics in terms of materials, dyeing methods, weaving style, and other aspects of production.

Many tribal weavings are sometimes incorrectly referred to as Gabbeh. Technically, however, a Gabbeh is a dense, thick-piled weaving with a relatively high pile, usually with little or no decoration. Among nomadic communities, it was not primarily created as a decorative object, but was commonly used as a practical floor covering, helping protect against ground moisture.

This Gabbeh was woven by the Turkic branch of the Qashqai people. It is made entirely of wool and features a design inspired by the Shah Abbasi floral motifs of the urban Tabriz rug tradition. It is woven with symmetrical knots in a fully depressed weave.

The repeated Shah Abbasi flower, interpreted here as a symbol of the lotus, appears in four horizontal rows across a madder-red field. This arrangement may also carry a symbolic reference to the sacred significance of the number eight.

In traditional rug design terminology, this composition belongs to a one-directional repeating pattern. However, by choosing the Shah Abbasi flower as the main motif, the weaver softens that directional effect so successfully that the design appears almost allover and balanced from every viewing angle.

One of the most distinctive qualities of this rug is its vivid and joyful colouring. The lively palette reflects the energy, vitality, and colour traditions of the Turkic Qashqai nomads, something that can also be seen in their traditional clothing.

A closer look at the field reveals several English letters woven into one half of the rug. These are almost certainly initials connected to the weaver or weavers, suggesting that the maker belonged to a newer, educated generation.

Another exceptional feature is the border, created through the repetition of female nomadic figures dressed in traditional clothing and rendered in different colours. This unusual and beautiful border may be read as a reference to the important role of women in nomadic life and possibly to women’s dance and ceremonial presence.

Because of the distinctive figural border, it is also possible that this rug was created for a ceremonial purpose or as a special gift.
