A hand-knotted rug can be slightly irregular without being poorly made. It can also look tidy at first glance while hiding a structural problem that affects how it lies, wears or fits a room. The useful question is not simply, “Is it perfect?” It is, “What kind of variation am I seeing, and does it matter?”
This guide answers that question with help from a Persian-language field study of pile-rug weaving in Kashan. The study is valuable because it links visible problems to practical causes at the loom. It is not a universal scorecard for every Persian rug, and its historical sample should not be used to label all Kashan rugs. Instead, it gives us a disciplined vocabulary for observation.
First, separate five very different things
Buyers often use flaw, damage and imperfection as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Separating them prevents both needless worry and false reassurance.
- Weaving irregularity: a small variation created by hand. A slightly wandering motif, a minor difference between mirrored flowers or an uneven knot can be part of the making process without affecting use.
- Structural weaving defect: a problem made during weaving or finishing that changes shape, stability, design setting or function. Strong width drift is an example.
- Condition damage: something that happened after the rug left the loom, such as wear, moth activity, moisture damage, staining or a tear.
- Repair: later work intended to stabilize or restore the rug. A good repair may be appropriate and durable; a poor one may be visually distracting or structurally weak.
- Abrash: a colour shift across the pile. It may reflect dye lots, wool, oxidation or the sequence of weaving. Our separate guide to abrash in hand-knotted rugs explains why it is not automatically a defect.
One rug can contain more than one category. A weaving irregularity may sit beside later wear, or a repaired edge may also show abrash. Describe each observation independently before forming an overall judgment.
What the Kashan field study actually found
Farideh Talebpour's study examined 92 cases in Kashan County and surrounding weaving centres. The sample included 75 rugs still on looms and 17 completed carpets. Published in 2006, it was designed to identify training needs among weavers, not to estimate today's market-wide defect rate.
The researchers recorded several issues on some rugs, which is why the percentages overlap and do not add to 100. Crookedness was the most frequently recorded problem, followed by two forms of vertical setting distortion. Pattern-reading errors and medallion distortion were also prominent.
The percentages are helpful because they show which problems deserved attention in that study. They should never be used to assume that an individual rug is defective because of its origin. For cultural and design context, read our introduction to Persian Kashan rugs.
1. Crookedness and width drift
A rug is crooked when its sides do not remain reasonably parallel or its width changes noticeably from one end to the other. Handmade rugs do not need machine-cut geometry, but strong narrowing, widening or bowing can make placement difficult. It may also indicate uneven forces within the foundation.
In the study, crookedness appeared in 40 of the 92 cases. The cause table associated 20 of those cases with over-pulling the thick weft, six with excessive twist in that weft and 14 with a grouped set of loom, warp and width-control factors. Those grouped factors included problems related to loom alignment and the devices or practices used to maintain width.
For a buyer, the practical test is simple. View the entire rug on a flat surface and compare both long edges. Then ask whether the variation is visually quiet, whether it prevents the rug from lying flat and whether furniture placement will make it more or less noticeable. A slight handmade deviation can be acceptable. A severe hourglass outline, pronounced wedge shape or unstable edge deserves closer assessment.
2. A design set too compressed or too open
A rug design is built row by row. How firmly the wefts and knots are packed affects how much length those rows occupy. If the structure is beaten too firmly or packed too densely, the design may become vertically compressed. If it is set too loosely, the same number of rows may occupy too much length and the design can appear stretched.
The Kashan paper records these as pāyin-zadegi and balā-zadegi. Rather than rely on literal translations, it is clearer in English to describe the visible result: a design set too compressed or too open. In the paper's sample, open setting was recorded in 33 cases and compressed setting in 24.
The study connects compressed setting with heavy comb beating, mismatched yarn scale, inconsistent wefting, warp-tension problems and an unsuitable comb. It connects open setting with insufficient beating, material mismatch, inconsistent wefting, improper lower-warp tension and loom or beam issues. The lesson is broader than any single tool: design proportions emerge from the relationship among materials, tension, wefts and beating.
A stretched flower or shortened medallion is not always obvious without a reference. Look for abrupt changes within the same rug. If the top half is noticeably more open than the bottom, or repeated units suddenly change height, the shift is more informative than a general preference for elongated drawing.
3. Pattern-reading errors and medallion distortion
Many workshop rugs are woven from a design chart, often called a cartoon in rug literature. A pattern-reading error can place a motif or colour in the wrong position, interrupt a repeat or disturb a centerline. The Kashan study recorded wrong pattern weaving in 19 cases. Misplaced motifs and misplaced colours were among the listed causes.
Medallion distortion is related but not identical. A weaver may read the chart correctly while uneven tension, mismatched material thickness or inconsistent beating changes the medallion's proportions. The study recorded medallion distortion in 18 cases.
Symmetry is a clue, not a commandment. Some rugs are deliberately asymmetric, and many village or tribal designs are drawn with lively variation. Evaluate a break according to the visual language of that particular rug. A single offset flower in a free-flowing field may feel natural. A sudden break in a rigid workshop repeat is more likely to read as an error.
4. Back whitening, border shifts and edge curvature
Less frequent problems in the study still help explain what to inspect. “Back whitening” refers to pale foundation material becoming unusually visible from the back. The paper associates it with unsuitable warp material and improper insertion of the thin weft. Border displacement occurs when the border appears to project or recede rather than maintain its intended relationship with the field.
Another recorded shape problem can be described as sword-like or bowed curvature. The study links it to unsuitable loom conditions and uneven warp tension. For a buyer, the exact Persian workshop term matters less than the observable question: do the sides and ends lie in a stable plane, or do they arc, buckle or pull against one another?
Turn the rug over when possible. The back can reveal foundation exposure, discontinuities, reweaving and changes in structure more clearly than the pile face. Defects usually come from a system, not one isolated mistake
The paper's most useful conclusion is educational. It does not treat quality as a matter of blaming a weaver for one bad movement. It identifies a connected system: loom preparation, material choice, proportional yarn use, weft control, beating, pattern reading and edge finishing.
This systems view matters when evaluating a finished rug. The visible symptom does not always identify one cause with certainty. Crookedness may involve weft pull, loom alignment or width control. Distorted motifs may involve chart reading, but they may also reflect changing tension or row density. Observation can identify what happened to the rug's appearance or function; a confident causal diagnosis may require an experienced weaver or conservator.
A practical three-distance inspection
You do not need laboratory equipment to make a better first assessment. Inspect the rug at three distances, in good even light, without deciding too early what any one mark means.
- Across the room: look at the entire outline. Are the sides reasonably parallel? Does the rug lie flat? Do the centerline, borders and major motifs feel coherent?
- At the edge: inspect selvedges, ends and corners. Look for pulling, loss, curling, repairs, detached fringe and abrupt border shifts.
- Close to the pile: examine wear, colour changes, foundation exposure, stains and local reweaving. Decide whether each feature belongs to original construction or later condition.
Photographs should follow the same sequence. Ask for one square full view, straight edge views, the back, both ends and close details of any area in question. A dramatic close-up without a full-rug view can exaggerate a minor feature; a distant room photo can conceal structural details.
When does a weaving flaw really matter?
Importance depends on degree, location, intended use and price. A small interrupted motif may have almost no practical consequence. A significant width change can complicate placement under a dining table. A raised or buckled edge can become a trip risk. A weakened foundation can shorten usable life if it is not stabilized.
Ask four questions:
- Function: does it lie safely and remain stable under normal use?
- Appearance: is the variation noticeable at normal viewing distance, and does it suit the rug's character?
- Progression: is the issue stable, or is it likely to worsen through use?
- Disclosure and value: has it been described honestly and reflected in the price?
This is why a single “perfect or defective” label is rarely useful. Hand-knotted rugs should be judged as individual objects. Frequently asked questions
Are all crooked handmade rugs defective?
No. Minor edge variation can be consistent with hand production and may have no practical effect. Crookedness becomes more consequential when it is pronounced, prevents flat placement, disrupts the design or reflects unstable structure.
Is abrash a weaving defect?
Not by itself. Abrash is a colour phenomenon. It may be part of the rug's material history and visual character. Judge its cause and appearance separately from shape, foundation and condition.
Can blocking or stretching fix a crooked rug?
Professional blocking may improve some distortions, but it is not an automatic or permanent solution for every structure. Avoid forceful home stretching. An experienced rug specialist should first determine whether the issue comes from temporary deformation, construction, moisture or a previous repair.
Does one pattern mistake reduce value?
Not automatically. Its effect depends on visibility, rarity, artistic character, condition and buyer preference. A tiny break in a lively village design may be inconsequential; an obvious disruption in a formal workshop carpet may matter more.
