Abadeh Heybatlu Rug — Midnight Blue & Terracotta | 6'7" × 10'0"

Regular price $2,250.00

Abadeh, the northernmost county in Fars Province, is one of the province’s major centres of carpet weaving. The town lies near the settlement area of the Heybatlu, a tribe of the Qashqai confederation, in its summer pastures. Close cultural and social ties developed between the tribe and the people of Abadeh, and the Heybatlu rugs of Abadeh can be understood as an urban adaptation of the tribe’s ‘horse-head’ design.

Abadeh Heybatlu rugs are woven in the Persian manner, either on horizontal ground looms with nomadic-style warping or on vertical looms with continuous, or Turkish-style, warping. They use the asymmetrical Persian knot and a depressed-warp construction known as lul, with two wefts, one thick and one thin. The warp and weft are cotton, and the pile is wool. In the past, the raw materials were prepared by traditional methods and coloured with natural dyestuffs using traditional dyeing techniques. These practices have now almost disappeared.

With its navy-blue field, this rug is a rare and beautiful example of Abadeh Heybatlu weaving, as rugs from this area generally have red or cream fields.

Viewed aesthetically, the rug evokes a star-filled night sky. A closer look reveals cosmic symbols such as the Pole Star, the gateway to the afterlife and the centre of creation, among others.

In its overall composition, this is an example of an urban-style rug with a central medallion and corner spandrels. From a more focused artistic perspective, however, its meaningful qualities lie in the affinity of its forms and motifs with nomadic weaving.

That nomadic character emerges when we look closely at the arrangement of space, the motifs and the ways they are combined. Mythic ideas and symbols—the Tree of Life, the blessing of water, fertility symbols and motifs protecting against the evil eye, among others—come together in a harmonious rhythm, each interpreting and illuminating the others.

This rug is like a page filled with symbols: each new look can reveal another discovery, another meaning, full of positive energy and a profound sense of the joy of life.

Please Consider

Our rugs are truly unique and crafted with care. Their vintage and handmade nature means they may have imperfections and signs of wear, which add character. Each rug is handmade, so it may not be a perfect rectangle.

We strive to capture the rugs’ true colors in daylight photography, but they might appear slightly different in low-light environments or on different screen settings.

We’re happy to provide photos taken in different lighting or answer any questions.

Feel free to reach out if you need more information or assistance.

Care Instructions

Vacuuming

Regular vacuuming keeps your rug looking its best and extends its lifespan, reducing the need for professional cleaning. For best results, vacuum both the front and back sides of the rug from side to side, avoiding the fringes.

Spills

If spills occur, blot them immediately with a cloth. Then spray water on the spot and blot again, repeating as needed. For pet urine, spray white vinegar to help break down the enzymes that cause odor.

Professional Rug Cleaning

It’s generally recommended to have your rug professionally cleaned every five years, but trust your instincts—if it appears to need cleaning, don’t hesitate to have it washed. Hand-knotted carpets should never be dry cleaned or steam cleaned. Wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies are usually not a good option. Always choose a professional rug cleaner who specializes in cleaning fine, handwoven carpets. If you’re in the GTA, we can provide professional rug cleaning for you!

Rug Pads
