Turkish Rugs - Rug the Rock

Shop Turkish Rugs and Kilims

Explore one-of-a-kind Turkish rugs and kilims made in Türkiye. Available pieces appear first, followed by unavailable pieces for reference. Check the product page for current availability. Its product page provides exact dimensions, materials, condition notes and close photographs, so you can compare the whole rug with its weave, edges and surface details before ordering.

This is an origin-based collection, not a group of machine-made products described only as Turkish style. The current selection includes named weaving areas and market groups such as Uşak, Eşme, Kars, Konya, Sivas Kangal, Malatya and Yahyalı. Those names describe different regional traditions and should not be reduced to one universal pattern, palette or construction.

Pile Rugs and Flatwoven Kilims

Turkish weaving includes both knotted-pile carpets and several kinds of flatweave. A kilim has no knotted pile, so the familiar symmetrical knot associated with many Anatolian pile carpets does not describe every Turkish textile. Materials, knotting, dyes and foundations also vary by region and period. Check the evidence recorded for the individual piece instead of relying on one national stereotype.

Browse the dedicated Oushak rug collection for Uşak-area pile rugs, or compare the broader kilim collection for pileless flatweaves from more than one country. The current Turkish selection includes both formats.

How to Choose a Turkish Rug Online

Start with the size and intended room, then study the complete view and close photographs. Look at pile direction, flatweave structure, fringe, side finishes, repairs and wear. A softened palette can come from age, use, washing or photography, so color alone does not prove natural dyes or vintage status. For narrow spaces, compare the available runner rugs. For terminology and origin, read our guide to Persian and Oriental rugs.

Rug the Rock is fully online and based in Oakville. Customers across the Greater Toronto Area can use Rug N' Roll, our Try Before You Buy service, to see selected rugs in their own space. Book a Rug N' Roll appointment, or order online for delivery.

FAQ

How to Determine the Value of a Turkish Rug?

Price depends on origin, age, materials, construction, size, condition, rarity, design quality and current market demand. Compare the exact rug rather than using a fixed price rule for all Turkish rugs.

How to Tell if Your Turkish Rug is Handmade?

Check the back for visible construction, confirm that the fringe continues from the foundation when fringe is present, and compare small irregularities in drawing and tension. Natural fibers alone do not prove that a rug is handmade. Use the product record, detailed photographs and structural evidence together.

How to Count the Knots in a Turkish Rug?

To count the knots in a Turkish rug, measure 10 centimeters along both the length and width. Count the knots in each direction, then multiply those numbers to get the total for that section. To find the number of knots per square meter, multiply that total by 100. Keep in mind that different countries might use slightly different methods for counting knots, so the process can vary.

How to Tell if a Turkish Rug is Silk?

Do not burn or damage the rug. Start with the documented fiber content, then compare the face and back under changing light. Silk can show strong directional luster, but mercerized cotton and synthetic fibers can also shine. A textile specialist or laboratory test is the safer route when certainty matters.

What is an Oushak Rug?

Oushak rugs, also known as Uşak rugs, come from the town of Uşak in Western Anatolia, Turkey. These rugs have a long history, dating back to the early Ottoman Empire. Some intricate designs have survived from the 16th century and can be seen in old paintings. Oushak rugs are known for their unique patterns and high quality.

What Are the Types of Turkish Rug Constructions?

Knotted-pile carpets and flatweaves are the two broad families. Halı commonly refers to a pile carpet, while kilim, cicim, zili and sumak describe different flatwoven or supplementary-weft structures. Regional terminology varies, so examine the individual textile rather than treating the names as interchangeable.

How Durable Are Turkish Rugs?

Durability depends on materials, spin, knotting or weave, foundation, pile height, condition, repairs, traffic and care. A sound handmade wool rug can serve for many years, but age or Turkish origin alone does not guarantee condition, longevity or future value.
