A true work of art from the Afshar people of Sirjan.
Over time, the Afshar tribe spread across different regions of Iran. What is especially fascinating is that, whether woven in Azerbaijan in the northwest or in Kerman Province in the southeast of the Iranian plateau, Afshar rugs have continued to carry an exceptional quality of weave. At the same time, the distance of nearly 1,500 kilometres between these regions naturally led to differences in pattern and colour over the centuries.
In Afshar rugs from Azerbaijan, we more often see sharper geometric lines. In the Sirjan region, one of the most important centres of Afshar weaving, the designs and weave tend to have a softer character. What these rugs share across regions, however, is masterful craftsmanship.
The flowers in this rug are known in Iran as Gol Farang, meaning European/French Flower. This name refers to floral motifs that weavers adapted from images and designs that had entered Iran many years ago through European influence.
Altogether, this rug reads like a historical narrative in woven form: hand-spun wool, vegetable dyes, skilled weaving, and ultimately, a rug that is unquestionably a work of art.
