Persian Rug Appraisal: Value, Photos and What to Ask

Buy your rugs appraised at Rug the Rock! Woohoo! - Rug the Rock

A Persian rug appraisal is an opinion of value for a stated purpose and date. It is not a guarantee that the rug is authentic, that it will sell for the appraised amount or that an insurer will accept the report. Before paying for an appraisal, decide what question you need answered: resale, insurance replacement, estate planning, donation, division of property or simple identification.

The purpose matters because different markets produce different numbers. An auction estimate, a dealer's purchase offer, a private-sale expectation and an insurance replacement value can all be reasonable while being substantially different.

What a Rug Appraisal Should Tell You

A useful report should identify the rug clearly, state the type of value being estimated, name the intended user and use, give an effective date, describe the scope of work and explain the evidence behind the conclusion. For a handmade rug, the relevant observations may include dimensions, construction, materials, likely production region, age range, design, condition, repairs and comparable sales.

The Appraisal Foundation describes USPAP as recognized ethical and performance standards that include personal property appraisal. Its personal property qualification criteria provide minimum requirements for appraisers in participating organizations. In Canada, the Canadian chapter of the International Society of Appraisers notes that personal property appraisal is not government-regulated in the same way as some other professions. That makes subject expertise, professional affiliation, written scope and conflict disclosure especially important.

Four Values That People Commonly Confuse

Auction estimate

An auction estimate is a range for a proposed auction under stated conditions. It is not the amount you will receive. Seller's commission, photography, transport, insurance, reserves, taxes and whether the lot actually sells can change the net proceeds.

Fair market value

Fair market value is defined according to the assignment and its legal or professional context. Do not assume that a casual online estimate uses the definition required for an estate, donation, tax or court matter.

Insurance replacement value

Replacement value generally addresses the cost of replacing an item with a comparable one in an appropriate market. It may be higher than a likely auction result. Ask your insurer what report format, appraiser credentials, inspection method and update frequency it accepts before ordering the appraisal.

Dealer offer or private-sale price

A dealer buying for resale must account for carrying costs, restoration, marketing and risk. A private seller may wait longer and still not achieve a retail asking price. An appraisal should not be presented as a promise that a buyer will pay the same figure.

Online Rug Appraisal Versus In-Person Inspection

A photo-based appraisal can be a useful first step when you need a preliminary identification or value range. It can also help decide whether an in-person report is worth the cost. Its limitation is the evidence supplied. Photographs may not reveal texture, repairs, foundation materials, active damage, colour run, altered dimensions or subtle differences between handmade and machine-made construction.

ValueMyStuff currently offers online carpet and textile valuations from uploaded photographs. Its own FAQ says the report includes auction and insurance estimates, but the appraisal certificate does not guarantee authenticity. Its published conditions also explain that the valuation is based on submitted photographs and information unless otherwise stated. Read the provider's current terms and ask your insurer or other intended user whether that format is acceptable.

Photographs to Prepare for a Rug Appraisal

Begin with a complete view. Close views should supplement, not replace, the full rug.

  1. Complete front: photograph the entire rug square to the camera in even, neutral light.
  2. Complete back: show overall construction, wear patterns and any attached fabric.
  3. Ends and sides: include fringe, kilim ends, selvedges, binding and signs of reduction.
  4. Back close view: include a ruler so weave scale can be assessed without guessing.
  5. Pile close view: show pile height, fibre appearance and low or bare areas.
  6. Condition: photograph stains, holes, repairs, moth activity, colour run and irregular areas individually.
  7. Labels and marks: include dealer labels, signatures, inscriptions and any old inventory numbers.
  8. Measurements: provide length and width at more than one point, excluding and including fringe as clearly stated.

Do not clean, trim, glue or repair a rug merely to make it look better for appraisal photographs. A treatment can remove evidence or cause damage. If the rug is fragile, ask a textile conservator or specialist how to handle it before unfolding or vacuuming.

Information to Collect Before the Appraisal

  • Purchase receipt, invoice or previous appraisal
  • Known ownership history and dates
  • Old photographs showing the rug in the family or collection
  • Restoration, cleaning and insurance records
  • Auction house, dealer or maker documentation
  • Any prior attribution, with its source clearly identified

Provenance is evidence, not a family story repeated as fact. Give the appraiser both, but distinguish documents from recollection. If a previous report uses a Persian regional name, the new appraiser should still assess the individual rug rather than copy the label.

How to Choose a Rug Appraiser

Match the specialist to the object

Ask how much recent experience the appraiser has with handmade rugs and textiles similar to yours. General personal property training is valuable, but a Persian village rug, an Ottoman court carpet and a machine-made reproduction require different market knowledge.

Ask about independence and conflicts

Find out whether the appraiser wants to buy, broker, consign or restore the rug. A conflict does not automatically invalidate every opinion, but it should be disclosed. A fee based on a percentage of the appraised value can create the wrong incentive.

Define the assignment in writing

The engagement should name the intended use, value definition, effective date, inspection method, report format, fee and delivery date. Ask whether the report includes comparable sales and photographs, and what assumptions or limiting conditions apply.

Check professional resources

The International Society of Appraisers Canadian chapter and the Canadian Personal Property Appraisers Group provide directories or information about member accreditation. Membership alone does not prove expertise in your rug, so still review the individual's specialty and sample-report approach.

What an Appraisal Does Not Prove

  • It does not guarantee authenticity unless the scope explicitly includes authentication and the expert is qualified to provide it.
  • It does not guarantee a sale price or a future increase in value.
  • It does not make every seller's origin, age or material claim correct.
  • It does not replace a condition report, conservation assessment or laboratory analysis when those are needed.
  • It may not be transferable to a new user or purpose.

Knot density, age, silk content or a famous regional label should never be used alone to calculate value. Condition, artistic quality, rarity, dimensions, colour, provenance, current demand and the relevant market all matter. Read our guides to Persian rug knots, vintage and antique rug claims and the factors that influence Persian rug value for background, not as substitutes for an appraisal.

Rug the Rock and Third-Party Reports

Rug the Rock is a fully online retailer based in Oakville, Ontario. A product description, price or seller statement is not an independent appraisal. If a specific rug includes a third-party report, read the issuer, effective date, intended use, value definition, inspection method and limiting conditions. Do not assume that an old report reflects today's market or that an insurance estimate is the price you should pay.

You can browse our currently available antique rugs with item-specific photographs, dimensions and condition details. Ask us if a material fact is unclear, and obtain independent advice when the purchase purpose or value justifies it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Persian rug be appraised from photos?

Yes, a specialist may provide a preliminary or formal photo-based opinion under a stated scope. The report should disclose that no physical inspection occurred. An in-person examination may be appropriate when material, condition, restoration or authenticity cannot be assessed reliably from images.

Is an appraisal the same as authentication?

No. Authentication and valuation are related but distinct questions. Confirm whether the engagement includes an origin or authenticity opinion and what evidence supports it.

Will an insurer accept an online rug appraisal?

Policies differ. Ask the insurer before ordering the report. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada also recommends maintaining an inventory of possessions with replacement cost, photographs and receipts for major items.

How often should a rug appraisal be updated?

There is no single interval for every rug or purpose. Ask the intended user, such as the insurer, and update when the market, condition, ownership, restoration or purpose has materially changed.
