A collector looking for an older Persian carpet, a designer specifying a custom size and someone hoping to see a vintage Moroccan rug in their living room need different inventories and different services. This guide compares six local sellers by those practical differences. It is a selection of places to investigate, not a ranking or a promise that every piece in a shop is handmade.

Start with the room before choosing a store. Measure the area the rug should cover, including the furniture footprint and door clearance. Photograph it in daylight and lamplight. Decide whether you need a particular old weaving, a specified colour and size, or the freedom to take a one-of-a-kind rug home and return it if the room disagrees. Those answers will narrow the search faster than the word “luxury.”

For an older Persian rug and care after purchase

Turco Persian Rug Company

Turco Persian operates at 452 Richmond Street East and traces its business to 1906. Its catalogue includes Persian designs and older examples, while its repair and restoration service gives buyers a place to ask about fringe, edge and foundation condition. That combination makes it a useful first stop when the rug's construction and future care matter as much as its colours.

For any antique candidate, ask to see both sides, especially around folds, corners and areas of low pile. A repair is not automatically a flaw; the important questions are what was done, whether it is stable and how it affects the quoted price. Ask for measurements of the actual piece, not merely a size category. A nominal 9-by-12 rug can vary enough to change where furniture legs land.

Independent customer feedback on GuildQuality is extensive, but much of the accessible recent material concerns cleaning. It supports investigating the service department; it cannot by itself establish the quality or value of a particular rug for sale. Evaluate the piece in front of you.

Blue Paisley Fine Rugs

Blue Paisley offers Persian, antique and contemporary rugs from 1440 Bathurst Street, Suite 101. Its listed services include home consultation, approval, cleaning and appraisal. This is a good contrast with a quick showroom purchase if you have an awkward room, several possible sizes or existing upholstery colours that make online photographs hard to judge.

Agree on the terms before anything leaves the store. The site's current sales notice says all sales are final, apart from its stated shipping-damage remedy. Ask whether an “approval” visit is a temporary pre-purchase arrangement, what deposit or transport fee applies, and when the sale becomes final. A helpful in-home service and a final-sale policy can coexist, but the distinction must be clear in writing.

Its antique collection also contains pieces marked sold, so a catalogue image does not prove current availability. Request the exact rug's current photos, dimensions and condition. If service is central to your decision, ask how the home consultation works and what the written approval terms cover.

For a specified size, palette or new design

Tapis Rugs & Carpet

Tapis at 1259 Caledonia Road presents traditional, transitional and modern rugs alongside custom-made work. That range is useful when you have not yet decided whether an existing rug or a commissioned one is the better fit. Bring the maximum and minimum dimensions that work, then compare the actual fibre, pile height and edge finish rather than relying on a rendering.

For custom work, the store currently describes a rendering, a physical strike-off sample, a deposit and a months-long delivery sequence. Request a written quotation stating which revisions are included, whether the sample fee is credited to the order, the tolerance on final dimensions and what happens if the delivered rug differs from the approved sample. A small sample can establish colour and feel, but it may not show how a large field of pattern reads across an entire room.

The posted return policy allows eligible regular-price items to be returned within 30 days, but excludes sale and customized items, says custom deposits are non-refundable, and states that returns are subject to a 20% restocking fee. Return shipping is also the buyer's responsibility. Confirm the exact written terms for the rug you choose before paying, particularly if it is a custom order.

Weavers Art

Weavers Art emphasizes hand-knotted pieces and bespoke design. Current third-party design coverage places its showroom at 120 Tycos Drive, Unit 2. Confirm the appointment and location with the business before visiting.

This is a useful stop if you want a rug that behaves as part of a room's design scheme, rather than only a ready-made antique. Bring fabric and paint references, but compare them beside a rug or material sample under both warm and cool light. Ask how the quoted construction differs from a tufted or power-loomed option, what fibre is in the pile and foundation, and how changes to scale affect the design. Hand-knotted is a construction description, not a guarantee that every colour, texture or price will suit your room.

Ask for a specification and care guidance tied to the exact piece or commission. Recent customer comments on an independent local listing describe helpful design assistance, although those reports cannot establish the construction or suitability of the rug you are considering.

For Moroccan rugs and a less predictable vintage find

Mellah

Mellah focuses on Moroccan rugs, including vintage and newer pieces. Its contact page lists the main shop at 309 Roncesvalles Avenue, while its homepage advertises a separate “More Mellah” discount outlet at 1547 Dupont Street. Check which site holds the piece that interests you, as “Mellah” alone is not enough to plan the trip.

The business advertises an in-home trial, rentals, cleaning and repair. Ask whether the trial covers the particular vintage rug, how long you can keep it, and who pays for delivery or collection. Vintage Moroccan pieces can have irregular outlines, varied pile and signs of use. Request a flat, full-length image and close views of any patched or worn area. A room photo can convey warmth and texture, but it often hides the exact edges and condition.

Designlines profiles the shop and its Moroccan focus. For a vintage piece, a personal trial and a careful condition check are more useful than an overall store rating.

Qalat, She Said

Qalat, She Said at 1083 Bathurst Street is another way to look at Moroccan work, particularly vintage pieces with individual pattern, texture and wear. Unlike a custom order, a one-of-a-kind rug must be judged as the actual object. Ask for daylight photos of the full face, back and edges, as well as any cleaned or repaired section. If the rug has an unusual shape, place painter's tape on the floor using its exact dimensions before deciding.

The store's published terms say vintage rugs may show age, are cleaned or repaired as needed, and can be returned within 30 days in original condition, with shipping and insurance costs deducted. That differs materially from Blue Paisley's posted final-sale terms. Confirm the current policy and estimated round-trip costs for your order before paying. An apparently generous return window is less useful if moving a large rug is expensive.

For any online order, request the precise return address, insured shipping estimate and packaging instructions in advance. These details determine whether the stated return window works for a large rug.

How to compare an expensive rug without relying on a label

“High-end” can mean old, rare, handmade, custom, unusually large or simply costly. The construction matters, but it is only one part of the decision. A well-made machine-woven or synthetic rug may be sensible for a busy room or a tighter budget. Wool is not automatically stain-proof, and an antique rug is not automatically an appreciating investment. Ask for fibre, weave, age estimate, origin and condition only to the level the seller can substantiate for that particular rug.

Make a short, like-for-like comparison: exact dimensions, fibre and construction; price including pad, tax and delivery; existing repairs or commissioned changes; lead time; cleaning instructions; and the written trial or return rule. If two rugs cost the same, one may include a home trial while another is final sale. If one is custom, compare the cost and timing of sample approval too. For older rugs, document existing wear in photographs before delivery and ask what changes during normal use would affect a return or service claim.

View colour where the rug will live. Phone screens and showroom lighting are unreliable for reds, creams and undyed wool. Put a sample or a full rug beside the sofa and curtains in daylight and at night. Check whether the rug anchors the front legs of the seating group, whether doors swing freely, and whether the pile is comfortable underfoot. If the store cannot offer a trial, measure carefully and ask for unfiltered close-ups and a short video of the rug laid flat.

For a custom piece, ask for a material sample and a written timeline. Finally, confirm the latest address, appointment hours, delivery charges and return conditions. Those five minutes of preparation are more valuable than visiting six shops without a clear comparison.
