Authentic Persian Rugs Made in Iran

Persian rugs are woven in Iran, where cities, villages and tribal communities have developed distinct carpet traditions over centuries. This collection brings those traditions together in one place, from finely drawn workshop carpets to bold village rugs, runners and tribal weavings. Each piece is one of a kind, and current inventory changes as rugs are sold or added.

Browse regional groups such as Tabriz, Heriz, Bidjar or Bijar, Hamadan, Kashan, Kerman and Qom. For tribal and regional character, explore Qashqai, Baluch, Bakhtiari and Afshar.

How We Describe Each Iranian Rug

A regional name is a starting point, not a complete quality grade. Knot density, materials and motifs can vary within the same weaving area. Product pages provide exact dimensions and the available information about age, origin, pile and foundation materials, condition and repairs. We identify natural or synthetic dyes only when there is evidence for that conclusion rather than assuming every older rug uses natural colorants.

Use the filters and product photographs to compare size, palette and design. Then open our illustrated encyclopedia of more than 50 Persian rug types for regional histories, alternate spellings and identification notes. For construction details, see our guide to knots in Persian rugs.

Choosing a Persian Rug for Your Space

Begin with the room dimensions and the amount of floor you want to show. Next, compare pile height, foundation, condition and how the rug will be used. A substantial Heriz or Bidjar may suit an active living area, while a finely detailed workshop carpet may be chosen for a more formal setting. These are practical tendencies, not fixed rules. The best choice is the individual rug whose size, structure, condition and design fit your room.

Persian Women Weave a Rug

Hand-knotted rugs made in Iran, from room-size Heriz and Tabriz carpets to tribal Qashqai and Baluch rugs and long runners. Each rug is one of a kind, and its listing shows the price, exact measurements and condition.

FAQ

What makes a rug Persian?

In this collection, Persian means a handmade rug made in Iran. Regional names such as Tabriz, Heriz, Hamadan or Kashan point to weaving traditions within Iran, but a name is not a quality grade, and designs, materials and knot density vary within one area. Rugs woven elsewhere in Persian-style designs are listed under their own country of origin. Compare more than 50 regional traditions in our illustrated guide to Persian rug types.

How can I tell whether a Persian rug is handmade?

Turn the rug over. On a hand-knotted rug the design shows on the back as rows of individual knots, usually with small irregularities in drawing and tension. Where fringe is present, it is normally the ends of the warp threads rather than a strip sewn on afterwards. A perfectly uniform grid, a glued or latex backing, or a sewn-on fringe points to machine or tufted production. These signs support a judgment without settling origin or age, so each listing records the construction details we can document. Our guide to knots in Persian rugs shows the structures up close.

What affects the price of a Persian rug?

Size, age, condition, materials, knot density, the quality of the drawing and colour, and rarity all play a part, so two rugs with the same regional name can be priced very differently. Every listing shows its own price, and you can sort this collection by price. Choose a Persian rug for its quality and for how it suits your room; no rug is guaranteed to rise in value. Read what makes Persian rugs valuable for a fuller explanation.

What size Persian rug do I need?

Measure the room and the furniture the rug will sit with before you browse. In many living rooms the rug is large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to rest on it, with a band of floor showing around it. Under a dining table, it should extend far enough for chairs to slide back without catching the edge. These are starting points, not rules. Each listing gives exact measurements, and you can go straight to large rugs, runner rugs or small rugs, or compare standard Persian rug sizes.

How should I care for a Persian rug?

Use a suitable rug pad, rotate the rug from time to time so it wears and fades evenly, and limit long exposure to strong sunlight and damp. Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, and blot spills rather than rubbing them. For washing, stain removal or repairs, use a specialist rug cleaner. Our Persian rug care guide covers routine care in more detail.
